Walking

There are endless places to walk in Argyll and where you go will depend on your level of fitness, the time of year, your interests and the weather.  Some ideas are given at the bottom of the page.

If you don’t want to go too far from your cottage, then there are numerous tracks here on the Estate. You can walk by the shore, in the forest and up on to the moorland. On a shore-side walk you can look out for otters and other marine life and birds including oystercatchers, gannets, herons, guilliemots, divers, waders, curlews and even the occasional sea eagle, golden eagle or osprey.

The moorland tracks in the summer months are alive with skylarks, swallows, pippits, buntings, and plovers amongst many others. The bog cotton dances in the breeze and the orchids grace the scenery with their lilacs and purples. You can look out for buzzards, osprey and eagles and also for deer.

In the forests and woodland you may well see a red squirrel – their numbers are gradually increasing in the area – deer and pine martens. You will see numerous small birds flitting through the trees, and listen out for the woodpeckers!

If you do go further afield, you will find remote moorland, quiet glens steeped in history, old and ruined shielings with stories buried in their stones, rivers and lochs which have seen civilizations come and go, hillsides that have seen bloody battles, and streams which whisper the secrets they have heard over thousands of years.
