There is so much to do in the area it is impossible to list everything, but hopefully the following pages will give you some ideas of the huge diversity of the area, and just how accessible it all is from the cottages here at Ardmaddy. This is by no means a definitive list of activities - just a few.

Some of the best activities are those that cost nothing, like beach-combing, rock-pooling, sitting on a rope swing and paddling.

Things to Do

During your visit to Ardmaddy, you could easily just spend your time on the estate enjoying the gardens, woods, hill walks to enjoy the spectacular views over the island and walks along the coast, boating, swimming in the sea or fishing. There are lots of places to visit in the area too though, if you want to venture out. Here are a few ideas that many of our visitors have loved:

Inveraray Castle, the town of Inveraray and Inveraray Jail, Loch Fyne.

Kilmartin Glen and Kilmartin which has a fabulous recently refurnished museum or the Crinan Canal

Oban is a bustling fishing port town with plenty of lovely restaurants, shops and the Oban Whiskey Distillery.

Seil Island has a wonderful recently refurbished pub called the Tigh an Truish with amazing food, a village shop at Balvicar and nearby you can play golf. There is a little museum at Ellenabeich, the Oyster Bar restaurant and a little shop. From there you can jump on the tiny open ferry to Easdale (but check their schedule).

Easdale Island is well worth a visit – steeped in slate mining history, a walk around the island takes 40 minutes, where you see all the flooded slate mines. There are no cars on the island, and as you arrive on the pier you are greeted with the charming sight of all the residents’ wheelbarrows lined up used for transporting their groceries to their houses. There is a very informative little museum about Easdale and its history, and a couple of artists on the island, from whom you can  work buy artwork.

The Isle of Luing and it’s main village Cullipool are worth a visit. It also has a little museum.

Gardens – Both of these gardens are very special and well worth visiting: An Cala on Seil Island and Arduaine at Loch Melfort.
